Obbattu is a famous food prepared in south India for festivals and in special occassions


  • 1 cup chana dal or toor dal
  • 1 cup water (to cook the dal)
  • 1/2 cup powdered jaggery (medium sweet)
  • 2 tbsp grated coconut (optional)
  • 2 cardamom


  • Take dal in a pressure cooker and add 1 cup water and cook the dal by making 5-6 whistles.
  • Drain the excess water from the cooked dal. You can use this water to prepare rasam.
  • Take the cooked dal in a vessel and add jaggery and coconut and make it to boil till the jagger melts
  • Then Grind the mixture for smooth paste based on quantity of members.And remaining you can save it for later
